Homework: If Bradbury were sitting next to you...

Directions: Please respond to the following question before midnight tonight. Be sure to bring in at least one quotation from Fahrenheit 451 to support your brilliant response.

If Ray Bradbury were to follow you around throughout the day, what would he think about the way you conduct your life? What would he think of AHS? Again, please bring in textual evidence to defend your claims.

  1. If Ray Bradbury were to follow me around for a day I believe he would think I conduct my life in a fair. In today's society, reading is actually recommended so that gives me an advantage. Of AHS, Ray Bradbury would think it is a good place because it provokes thought. It doesn't just tell you all the answers. It asks you questions so that we can answer them. It asks us questions that will prepare us for the future, questions that haven't yet been answered.
Time captures us and solitude captures time. "if the men were silent it was because there was everything to think about and much to remember." This quote shows that Ray Bradbury values silence and along with silence comes solitude. I believe that I incorporate silence and solitude into my life and that it provokes thought in me. Therefore I believe that Ray Bradbury would think I conduct my life well.

  2. If Ray Bradbury followed me around for a day I would try and keep him away from the reality T.V. shows. I would do this because he spoke out against those sort of things. He obviously disliked the fact that people had begun to just rely on the media for information. " I think that we should get another T.V. wall put in"
"do you know how much the third one set me back?"

Mildred says that she wants another T.V. wall she does not care that it is expensive she is addicted to it. I think that Bradbury would approve of our school as we do not ban books. we allow students to think freely.

  3. If Ray Bradbury followed me around for day, he would conduct my life as boring. I would read but mainly do other things as well. He would think of ASH by being happy because we have a library and school text books.

Ray Bradbury put in his book the feeling of the need of reading, the need of a book. He puts it in by having the firemen in the book burn books that aren't aloud.

  4. I think that if Ray Bradbury was following me around school and after school for one day, in think that he would think that i live a very balanced life, and he would be impressed of the way that AHS conducts it self when it comes down to athletics and education and how we hold education to a higher standard and that athletics take a back seat. He would also be impressed about teachers wanting students to ask questions rather than having them stay silenced.

Bradbury put in his book that in schools, kids wouldn't be allowed to ask questions and we know this because Clarisse said that they would stay in school and not be allowed to ask questions.

  5. I think Ray Bradbury would be surprisingly impressed with my life and how my routine works. Ironic I would use the word routine because that sounds robotic, but believe me I'm not a robot Ray.
He would be relieved that I know what's going on around the world such as a giant war. He would be happy to see that I attend Arapahoe High School, impressed that here we encourage people to push themselves to be as smart as they can be. He would also be happy that I participate in other activities so I'm very variable and I also have many friends that are the same way as me, smart, hard working, and involved in schoolwork. At AHS, questions are absolutely encouraged and everyone has their own talents and gifts. He would also be happy I read his book Fahrenheit 451, not only because it's his book, but because I'm reading and attaining information!!!

My quote is where Granger talks about their importance in their world, "Walk carefully. Guard your health. If anything should happen to Harris, you are the Book of Ecclesiastes."

He would be happy to know that I have read plenty of books and if no more of them were left I could retain and preserve the knowledge I have from them as Granger instructs Montag to understand.

  6. If Ray Bradbury were to follow me around for a day he would see a couple of things he may fear and yet appreciate of today's society. the first of this is that he would fear where we are heading because of the technology that we posses and the knowledge that we have gained. yet, and the same time he would appreciate this same technology because it keeps everyone more involved and more connected to the society around them. due to this connection we are capable of deeper thinking and access to views of others not just in our society but in the world as a whole.

What Ray Bradbury would feel towards Arapahoe is a place of solace and thought. To people like me and my peers it is a second home. he would realize that everyday our lives are conducted in a learning environment that encourages thought. he would respect This environment because it is leaving the society he feared we would become behind.

Proof of these two aspects is on page 169 where Beatty owns "thousands upon thousands of books lining the walls of the fire chiefs hidden Library!" know I know that many of you may not of read this part but I feel that Bradbury added this to the book because it shows that though the fire chief may not read he is encouraged to think. Library's offer solace and the fact that the fire chief has one says to me that there were people who were thinking and getting around the law. I feel Bradbury would thus feel floored and yet in fear of how life works today.

  7. If Ray Bradbury was with me for a day I think he would be interested in my life style. I work hard and I play a ton of video games. But since joining the Science Fiction class given at Arapahoe, I think he and I would have a lot in common. I was given an assignment to write short story about time travel. I love the very genre time travel is in and I like Bradbury's work. He is one of the inpirations for my story and if he were alive today I would send it to him first to see what he thought of it.

  8. If Ray Bradbury were to follow me around for a day, he would see my life as normal. I go to school, go to lacrosse, and do my homework, i am not addicted to video games or T.V. like Mildred is. I think if he walked into Arapahoe, he would love it. We are taught to ask questions and to read to gain information not just look at videos and the T.V. when we need to learn something. He would love our class if he saw it. The questions asked in class are thought provoking and not questions that we have answers to.

  9. I think Bradbury were to follow me around for a day he would be suprised at how our society turned out. We aren't robots and I don't personally need technology to get through my day. As for AHS I think he would be proud that I take pride in getting a good education and my strive for learning. I also think he would be proud of my way of not conforming to anything and doing things my way and not having anyone tell me what to do or how to do it.

  10. I think that Bradbury would feel good on how society is today. People read books all the time, where not brainwashed by tv, and where encourged to ask questions and be different from others. Bradbury creates a society in F451 where everyone is almost the same in the way they act. In our day people have tons of induvidualism that makes are society good. Also Bradbury would like the way the youth has turned out. On page 128 of F451 Montag says, " they would have killed me." In this quote he is talking about the teenagers of his town that for the fun of it where going to try to kill Montag by running him over. And in our society it is not a good thing to kill someone in a car. So Bradbury would like our society if he followed me around for a day.

  11. Bradbury would be happy with today's society with the fact that we still read books; unlike the society portrayed in Fahrenheit 451. However I feel that he would not be so happy with all the reality TV that brainwashes people like we discussed today in class. I feel that he might think that our society was a little like the one in 451 because some of us follow whats on the TV or whats popular at the moment. The quote I like is Granger asking Montag on page 156: "What did you give to the city Montag?" Montag replies: "Ashes." I think that even though Montag thought all he gave to the city was it's destruction he gave so much more. He was one of the few people who wanted to learn for himself and rise above the rest of the brain-dead society. Montag would be one of many people in our society today because everyone can learn for themselves.

  12. If Ray Bradbury followed me around one day I think he would be amazed about how much we use books in just one day. He would see that books are pretty much an every day essential to learning. I also think he would be happy because we didn't totally abandon books like how society in his book did. On page 23 Clarisse tells Montag "sometimes I just sit and think." Many people don't get the chance to do this but instead just race through their lives. Ray Bradbury would be glad to see that like Clarisse I sometimes also just sit and think.

  13. If Ray Bradbury were to follow me around for one day I think that he would be amzed at our society and what happens. For example I think he would be surprised about all the books we read and all the technology we use. All of the book supports this about because all he talks about are how scarce books are and when he see's all the books we use he would be amzed. I think Ray would also freakout at the fact AHS has a libary and the fact that kids carry around and read books most of the day. Again all of the books texts support this.
