Stereotypes and Steinbeck

Think back to the article we read in class today ("The Nazi in the 7th Grade") as well as Chapter 4 in Of Mice and Men. Have a discussion we each other using the blog in which you respond to some or all of the questions below:

•What is a stereotype, and where do stereotypes originate?

•Many people think that we’re all somewhat racist, deep down. Do you agree? Do you think people hold onto their stereotypes?

•All the men on the ranch in Of Mice and Men would be considered “working class” or even “low class.” What stereotypes do they have of Crooks, and why do you think they hold onto their stereotypes of Crooks?

Remember to proofread before you post, and be sure to comment on others' posts. Enjoy!

  2. I think all people are racist like Gabe he says he doesn't like people but he does ha ha but like everyone believes in those stereotypes and like without the stereotypes of race and hair colors how can we have jokes and everyone one needs jokes. Everyone.

that crooks should be evil and always doing bad things an never changing thats what i think it is.

what do you call it when you put all the girls from Kentucky together. A full set of teeth

  3. I think a sterotype got started when people started looking at each other differntly and started looking for people to do somthing different.

  9. I think stereotypes originated when one race tried to put themselves above another by making them look bad. Those stereotypes were passed down from generations and still exist today.
The men on the ranch hold on to the stereotypes of Crooks because he is the only one on the ranch that is lower in society. They are all of the poor, working class, which at this time was not bad, but still they needed to make themselves feel better by being prejudice towards Crooks. The only people who treat Crooks as a person are Slim and George.

  10. I think a steroype is what a person thinks another persons character is I think it started when people saw other people do things and say hey that guy is mean when he isnt. I think people do not hold on to their sterotupes because people and sterotypes change.
I think they think crooks is a person who cant do work because he is cripled and black. They hold on to their sterotypes of crooks because he is black and that they dont hang out with him so they dont know what he is like.

  11. I think i agree with Hunter, in saying that stereotypes were when someone of a certain race did something, and people noticed but they didnt really think it was a big deal because it was only one person, but then it started reoccuring so people decided that that is the way that race acts, when in fact only some people of that race act like that.

I believe everyone is rascist but just different levels of it, and people definetely hold onto their stereotype because it makes each persoon of every race unique.

Crooks stereotype is a loew life crippled african american who is just cheap labor , in the book of course, and everyone held onto their stereotype of Crook because they dont want to be judged for thinking diferently of him, unless its dirogatory

  12. I think that Stereotypes started when someone saw someone doing somthing. So they gossip about what they did but saying things that make it seem they did somthing totally different.

Every one becomes racist when they look at someone different or say something racist by our own free will.

The sterotype on Crooks is a criple and black. They hold that stereotype to Crooks because they don't know him very well and everyone is calling those stereotype comments.

  13. A stereotype is a belief that someone of a race acts in a certain way because of their race. Stereotypes originate from movie, life, and actions that majority of a race does. We are all racist because we see color for a reason. We hold on to stereotypes because its human nature to believe that all things are not the same but if something acts in a certain way, everything that is associated with that one thing acts the same as the one that acts different. In the book they stereotype crooks as a nigger or slave. He is lower than them because he is black. They hold this stereotype because black people were slaves and until about 1970 black people were not treated as equals, and that is still somewhat true today.

  14. I think we are all at least a little racist deep down. We all have jokes, stories, and movies about racism, and I think it is our own way of dealing with our own racism. Some of us are a little more tolerent than others, but we can still have those momments wher we are are racist. It is not right but we can help it a little bit.

  15. I think stereotypes were started when a group of people generalized another group in a derogatory way. Those generalizations then spread and they became a stereotype.
They have a stereotype of Crooks being not as important and not to be trusted.

  16. I agree with Justin when he says that a race tried to put themselves above another and with Matt when he says that we are all a little racist deep down. I think that they hold that stereotype of Crooks because they where raised that way. Like he is a story my friend Anthony the kid that was in our class until last week and i where throwing the ball in front of my house. Then this old lady comes out of her house for no reason and starts gardening and I'm throwing perfect passes and my friend told me that she was calling me names and ripping on me and Anthony wasn't very strong so he couldn't always get the ball to me so it hit the ground constantly and she was all around praising him so this went on for about 40 minutes and my friend was under a big tree and as soon as he moved to get the ball because my arm was giving out she went inside as fast as she could move. Anthony and i thought that it was because she saw that he wasn't white.

  17. A stereotype is a belief that a whole race acts a certain way or looks a certain way. I agree with what Justin has to say about how stereotypes generated, I think that when one race tried to put themselves above another race in a certain aspect of life, one race bacame known as the dumb or smart or good-looking or short race.
The stereotypes the men in Of Mice and Men have of Crooks are that because he is black and that because he has a crippled back, he isn't as good as them. He is looked at as not equal to a person. They hold onto their stereotypes of Crooks because not only is everyone holding to the stereotypes but back then people didn't worry about changing stereotypes because they were too focused on surviving.
I believe that we all have some stereotypical behavior in us but not all of us have racist beliefs in us. Even when you look at a person, you have something that comes into your head about them, bad or good, and that is stereotypical.

  18. I agree with Ben he made some very good points. YA a stereotype is when someone makes a judgment about someone else with having no background knowledge on them. For example someone might look at a blond and just assume they are stupid. Ya I don't think everyone is Racist but ya everyone holds some type of stereotype. I agree with matt on how we all have those "racist" moments but I think most the time it isn't personal. In the cases I know the people are just joking around. Nothing personal. The stereotypes on crooks are that he is black. They think they are naturally superior to him just cause of there color of skin. They think like this cause they don't know any better because most likely they learned from their parents.

  19. I think i agree with Hunter and Gage. Stereotypes usually start when someone looks different or they do something.
Everyone is a little racist because everyone views someone in a certain way.
The reason everyone has a stereotypical attitude toward him is because he is black. And back then black people were thought of as very low and almost scum.

  20. Ok, I agree that everybody has their stereotypes and everyone is racist but I also think it depends on where you grow up or live, and a lot comes from parents and family. Yeah poor crooks is the one getting it here cause of the time and he's black that's the way it was then. yeah its unfair but that's again the way people were raised and taught to behave. on another topic the Nazi in seventh grade, she's one of those people I pity because they don't see whats really there in people. Like one of my Hispanic friends back at Hinkley actually created a new formula for a math problem that made things easier. People don't see the potential at first and think it's not there and that's kinda sad. but hey people will either learn the hard way or be stubborn old people who are GROUCHY. and who doesn't hate that. but this is life.

  21. I personaly belive stereotypes start with others peoples insecuritys and they use them to bring the other person down.

I would agree with that statement that were all somewhat rasist i know that i can say rasist things from time to time, but it depends how deep down thoughs rasist values go into your morals that determin weather or not you are pushing a boundry and i think a lot of people would agree there is a defenate boundry.

The men in Mice of Men stereotype crooks as being a "Nigger" and a stable buck, but the only reason why they do that is becuse they are lower class and the higher class people above them stereotype so it goes in a circle back to crooks. But who/does crooks stereotype?

    ReplyDelete
  22. OK, hahaha, this is going to sound crazy but I also agree with Justin on what he had to say about Crooks though. Crooks is black and back in those times black people were looked upon differently and since Crooks was black all the other men on the ranch belittled him to make themselves feel more powerful and important even though.
As for what a stereo type is I believe that a stereo type varies based on anyone person that you ask. A stereo type is how one person views another race of type of people. As for where they originate, I could not tell you. Someone somewhere said something about some person and a person he was with took at literally and told someone else. If you ask me a stereo type in its early stages may just be a simple rumor that evolves and grows by each telling.
Sure we all hold on to a stereo type. Most people probably do not even realize they are though, and that to me is sad. Every single person that I can claim to know, knows a blond joke and they thinks its funny. Everyone of them, now this may not be looked upon as a stereo type but I believe it is.
So all of us have heard and use stereo types and they, whether approved of or frowned upon are known.

  23. i beleive that everybody is slightly racist, and everybody has a stero type that goes long with them, kinda like blonds.

  24. 1. A stereotype is something that we automatically assume when we see a certain type of person. For example, when we see people in business attire we automatically think they are powerful. Some stereotypes are good but some are also bad. It's just helpful to not use stereotypes.

    2. I do think that is some way we are all racist. I'll admit that I do sometimes say and think racist things. And so does everyone else. It is a thing that we all do, some more than others, but is always going to happen.

    3. In "Of Mice and Men" they all stereotype Crooks as the lowest because he is black. They are trying to put themselves higher in their "low class" so they pick on the thing under them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. For me a stereotype is more than just what you assume to be true for a broad audience. Its the image I receieve when I hear someones opinion of someone. Stereotypes can come in many forms, while usually visualy derived, they can also be derived from one's actions or friends. Some stereotypes can be beneficial to society. i.e Taxis are yellow. Others can be humerous. i.e All cops love doughnuts. And of course there are those that are detramental. i.e All teenagers are lazy. While this is true for myself, its not the case for some. However there is not much we can do to all out stop stereotyping, as everyone does it.

  27. - The basic definition of a stereotype would be a broad assumption of actions or characteristics of a group of people

    - I agree that everyone is somewhat racist deep down and it is just a normal human characteristic but there is a fine line between being racist and crossing the line.

    - The men from Of Mice and Men think of crooks as trouble makers and never changing
