F451 Fishbowl #4

As you discuss Fahrenheit 451 through page 80, think about trying to make some connections between Bradbury's future society and ours.

Enjoy, and bring in quotations from the text to support some of your brilliant points!

  2. i agree with the inner circle. there seems to be no religion in this city.

  3. Why do Montag and Mildred have trouble understanding the books when they are trying to read them? do they not know how to read?

  4. Tyler:
I agree with what you said about religion. However, I think that is a huge statement to say, I think that there is religion most definitely, but the society fails to recognize it as a whole. Could the government be the religion?

  5. I think that the government thinks that if there is religion there woulld be more diversity and more people would be thinking about there world today and why it is so different from the past.

  6. Hunter- I feel that they could have some relation but i don't think that is the only connection going on.

I think they know how to read, I just think that they are not used to reading things with substance and knowledge so they are having a hard time with it because the book is forcing them to be creative.

    ReplyDelete
  8. jacob- i think that they know how to read but the things that have been provided for them to read is understandable for everyone but a book with a meaning is hard because all they think about is themself

    ReplyDelete
  9. Jacob, I think he has a very hard time trying to read it because he has been in a society where books are illegal for so long so he probably doesn't know where to begin.

  10. Ya like what tyler said
that the people have no religion and when you think about it that they maybe don't know that the bible is a religious thing for all they know it could be fairy tale or something else because they don't have a general knowledge of the bible so they could be confused on what its about if that make sense

  11. I agree with Garret, all the people in the time period of the book only care about technology and don't have any need to be social and educated.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Jacob-
I don't think that the problem is that they cant read but rather they cant interpret what the message of the book is.

  13. You have to remember that not all literature is band. There are still certain magazines etc. that are available to the public.

  14. going back on what Tyler s said, how can there be religion with no books. I mean the bible, Qur'an, and other religious books teach their followers of the religion.

  15. Jacob

I think that Montag and Mildred have trouble when they are reading the books, they do know how to read, they are trying to read more complex ideas than what they are used to seeing and the fact that only Montag is interested in reading, doesn't help Mildred get as interested as him with the books.

  16. Jacob
I think that they know how to read but like middle schoolers, they are not at the level of understanding that is needed for them to think and understan it

  17. I think the bible symbolized past civilization, where there was culture, religion and thought. The bible is a very controversial book, and it makes one think, believe, and follow. in this civilization, the only thing people believe in and follow is the "Relatives" and their government.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Jacob- I think that they do not understand the books because they are not raised to learn the different usages of words and how they can be arranged to play out to tell a story. Its like when we read some Shakespeare, we do not understand the tougher of phrases, and that seems to confuse us at some point, which is probbably what they are feeling, which is why they don't understand.

  19. Religion is probably not accepted in this society for the equality reason. One group of people who believe in one thing might make another group mad because they say what they believe is better than what the other group believes. People who may not be religious might feel that they are not as equal as those who do or just the opposite.

    ReplyDelete
  20. If the government decided long before that this is what they wanted to do with society, do you think in the present time of the story you could say they are happy with their decision or do they regret their path but cant turn back?

  21. Who would would you rather be: Mildred, who is perfectly happy but completely absorbed in the meaningless parlor, or Montag, who is certainly not happy but has more depth and knowledge?

    ReplyDelete
  22. cody- the government i think has all together got rid of religion. if there is no bible and no mention of anyone going to a church i think the government has just eliminated it completely. but the government being the religion does not meet what i think of a religion. they dont worship the government and dont even know about the goverment

  23. What do you think about the Denham's Dentrifrice ad on the subway?

    ReplyDelete
  24. Brendan- I agree with the fact that they need to or want to keep everything and everyone equal. They can't have a bigger religion running their country, so they chose not to have one it seems like, they want everything to be equal, so they do not need a relegion.

  25. I'm hearing some amazing comments from the inner circle today- I will admit I'm pretty far behind at this point.
Are these people actually like animals? I think so- their society is CAGED. I want to know what you fine fellows think.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Justin, I would rather be Montag because Mildred is blind in a sense. Sure she may be "happy", but she knows nothing of the outside world and her happiness is an empty one. Montag may be unhappy right now but at least he realizes what is going on and could potentially change it for the better thus gaining true happiness.

  27. Mark-

That was the answer I was looking for. They do not have the analyzing skills needed to understand complex literature.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I agree with Brendan that religion will only make more issues in this type of controlled community.

    ReplyDelete
  29. just what tanner said in the inner circle
what do you think that the people of the city do like cops doctors and teachers etc... does do they burn or destroy art from the past or something like that

    ReplyDelete
  30. Kevin- It does seem like they are caged into their enviornment, like a zoo animal, they go by what the zoo keepers say, when they eat, get to go outside, it seems like that is the society in F. 451

  31. Cody

I don't really think we can figure that out yet, because we haven't seen enough of the government to show how they feel. On the other hand, the inner circle thinks that there are outside wars but there is no way that anyone in the society can figure out what is on the outside.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Brendan, I agree with you because the government is trying to keep everyone equal and in order to do that they half to keep the same belief among them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Brendan, religion is probably not accepted in this society. With what Beatty said, "Don't step on the toes of the dog lovers, the cat lovers, doctors, lawyers, merchants, chiefs, Mormons, Baptists, Unitarians..." in this society they try to keep every one together but they don't want to judge and the easiest way to judge is skin color and religion.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Kevin, I agree with what you said about how the people are like animals. They are being controlled by the government now but when Beatty was explaining the society to Montag he states that the people were the ones to start the society they live in before the government did. I myself am a little confused by this, why would the people do that to themselves?

    ReplyDelete
  35. i have a question kinda relating to carlos's comment. there has never been a mention of the color of peoples skin.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Hopefully you heard my idea inside the inner circle- do you agree or disagree? Why?

The question was: Is this a symbol that without their nationality, it could be happening ANYWHERE.... COULD happen anywhere.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I think there country is the only one so isolated and not educated about the world. This is the way it is because the government wants complete control and the government doesn't want people to know anything because they have done something very bad in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Do you think Mildred will turn Montag in for having about 20 books at their house?

    ReplyDelete
  39. Why does it have to be a world power today, it's a fiction book?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Tyler, this is a great observation! How do they have everyone equal if not everyone looks the same? Did they dye everyone the same color? There will always be people out there who think that someone is not equal just because of the color of their skin. How did the government work around this?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Kevin, i also think they are caged in their own society they are oblivious to the happenings of their outside world. The people hear the fighter planes but when the news reports on it they just say that they are ready for a war but everyday more planes fly over head. The government wants to keep the war under wrap by showing all the TV shows and stopping them from thinking outside the box.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Carlos is right, religion would make it easy for conflict to arise and the government is trying to make a society with a low amount of conflict.

    ReplyDelete
  43. tyler

They don't mention the colors of people because there all the same color there like a mix like there all black on one side white in the middle and red on the left like a ice cream sandwich

    ReplyDelete
  44. brendan- do you think that maybe each little like city is made up of the same type of people. there is never a mmention of how big the city is or if there is other cities. just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Jay

I dont think mildred will turn montag in, she didnt turn him in when beatty was at there house and i think that she doesnt want to see him get turned in.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Tyler, possibly but that city would have to be isolated from every other city though. Let's say black people lived in one city and white people lived in another. The black city could never know that the white city existed because it might cause an uprising because of the inequality.

  47. Class-
I wonder WHO exactly is running this society. We talk about government controlling them but it never really mentions them, we dont even know the people who exist in a government if there even is one. I think its just a group of people with jobs (some more demanding and higher up) due to the idea of equality.

    ReplyDelete
  48. ya thats a good thought brendan. no one knows whats going on in the world so why would they know about other people that are different.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I think that religion in this book is a symbol. It symbolizes a revalation that the government wanted to start by erasing it completely. Guy holds possibly one of the last bibles on the planet and he has a chance to bring it back, maybe he will start a revolution of worship and religion.

    ReplyDelete
  50. cody k.
I am right there with ya. I assume its the government because thats how things are in real life but judging by how things were along time ago in this book and things now maybe theres a king who controls everything. How people act, how people worship, how people live. I think that who ever is in control of this society is easily comparable to Hitler.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Connor St.
when you mention the gov avoiding conflict it made me think that things got so bad along time ago a revolution started. Maybe their goal was to keep people so aloof from everything that they cant do anythying about it because they doent know of a possible conspiracy taking place.

    ReplyDelete
  52. lee- I am not sure if there is even religion at all anymore. I think it would be impossible to have religion with out the sacred books.

Kevin I agree that society and its people are like animals. These people only care for themselves and no one else. Just how Beatty talked about the reason they got rid of books was because it made them unhappy, people only do what makes them happy and that is only caring about themselves.

Connor M- I think you made a very good point showing that maybe Montag will possibly start a revolution of religion and quite possibly bring it back. Montag has finally opened his eyes to book and fought the government. This quite possibly could be the next step to his plan.
