You're Being Watched

To what extend do you agree or disagree with the following statement?

Numerous security cameras should be installed both inside and outside Arapahoe High School so that nearly every part of the school is under constant surveillance. This way, we can ensure the safety of our students and staff.

Remember to be thorough in your response (all responses should be at least 3 lines long), and to be professional with your grammar, spelling, and word choice.

  1. I do agree with statement because if the school is in trouble we can get as much kids out of the school in the areas that are safe.

  2. The school already has security cameras almost everywhere except the bathrooms and locker rooms; but, if the school decided to put up even more cameras, it would be an invasion of privacy, and would not insure the safety of staff or students anymore than now, because not many bad things happen in the locker rooms.

  3. I disagree with this statement because we live in a free country and this sounds like the Soviet Union. Students are going to get hurt anyway so it doesn't matter if it's for protection. People would find the blind spots to cause trouble in.

  4. I both agree and disagree with this statement. I believe that it is ok to have cameras in the school for both its security and the safety of other people. But they should not be in the bathrooms or locker rooms. I think this because they could easily be misused.

  5. I do not agree with this statement at all. It is obvious that cameras can help our school's safety. But, you can't place cameras in areas like student bathrooms and locker rooms. That, would be more benefiting to the viewer just creeping on kids then it would to help the security. That's way too far, I disagree.

  6. I think that these security measures are probably for the good of the people in our school. I agree that these cameras should be on the outside but on the inside I do not think that there should be like a camera in every classroom. I think that there needs to be some privacy so there should be some cameras but not everywhere.

  7. Security cameras should be installed throughout the school but they shouldn't be installed everywhere. They should not be installed inn the bathrooms, but it would be a pretty good idea to install the cameras in most parts of the building.

  8. I agree that we need security cameras inside and outside Arapahoe High School but not so that every single part of the school is under surveillance at all times. It is important to be able to see around the school since there have been incidents of shootings before, but not so over controlled that if you were to look at a security tape, you could see yourself for the whole school day walking through hallways and sitting in classrooms.

  9. I would have to agree with this, that having cameras everywhere would be a good idea. It would keep kids and teachers focused and on task along with keeping everyone in line. However if there in the bathroom just forget it, thats just weird.

  10. In my opinion there is no point in installing cameras to protect people. One reason is because there are already security guards and teachers that can keep people safe. Another reason is that it would be a waste of time and money that the school could spend on other more important objects.

  11. I feel that this would be a beneficial thing to Arapahoe High School. This is because yes maybe you are being watched every where but while your being watched you are constantly safe. If these cameras were installed it would also allow for my time learning because certain safety drills could be dropped allowing more time in the class room.

  12. I thoink that securtiy cameras would limit the amount of stealing, and skiping class. These cameras would keep people safer and allow for only certain people to be out in the halls

  13. I agree I think that if we had security cameras then if something bad was a bout to happen the security cameras could see it and it might be stopped. It would help prevent shootings and many other things that may happen at a school.

  14. we do not need security cameras bacause a camera does not ensure safety. a camera does not protect anyone or anything it records it the only thing the school will get out of using cameras in the halls is maybe capturing a fight that never happens. complete waste of money

  15. Being a conspiracy theorist of a sort, I would replace the safety part of that with "safety". I'm not sure if the school NEEDS surveillance like that. Not that it wouldn't make a select few feel safer- plus, someone could shoot up the school even IF they were being watched.

The point here is that constant surveillance by cameras would be an expensive waste of time at making most of the students very uncomfortable. We have no reason to have such hardware.

  16. I think it would be a bad idea to install cameras inside the school because it would take away are sense of freedom inside the school. Being watched the whole day would make kids go crazy because we would have to behave all the time and thats part of the reason we make it through school each day. We are already watched every class period by teachers and teachers walk up and down the hallways during passing periods, why would we need the cameras?

  17. Tanner-
I have felt like I have been safe at this school already without security cameras at every point in the school. I feel like if we were watched everywhere, it would do more harm than good. It doesn't exactly ensure safety just because we're on camera.

  18. I think this would be bad because it is taking money out of the budget, when we half to make so many cuts. It is also bad because then the bad kids will just find a new place to go instead of the school. Sure they might be able to catch a couple of fights on camera but in the long run it is just going to waste money.

  19. I disagree with this statement because trouble will still happen. It takes more than one person to watch fifty cameras and by the time they see the danger the person could already be gone and they couldn't do anything about it. And it will start to be an invasion of privacy to do that, i think it is a waste of money.

  20. I think we have enough cameras in the school already and I always feel like I'm being watched. The last thing I want here are more cameras. Students shouldn't feel like they are constantly under the eyes of someone they can't even see.

  21. I agree with Cody Kotelko because it would mean that the viewer could watch you in the bathroom and that wouldn't be right, it would be creepy.

  22. I agree with Connor St. The video cameras would do nothing to increase security or stop a crime from happening. The only thing they will be able to do is to record the crime and help find the culprit. Unless security sees the crime on the camera and somehow makes it over there in time, they wont help in that moment.

  23. I agree with ConnorM, they do not protect us but they just watch us in the school.

  24. I agree with AaronS2012 because we should have security cameras but not to the point where it is in the each and every classroom. I also agree with Cody Kotelko because there shouldn't be cameras in the bathroom.

  25. nobody sits in a room and only watches a screen if there if something that happens it will be too late to do anything. if it makes you feel secure than put in the cameras,. just know it won't stop anything.

  26. I agree with tanner because its just wrong to be watched all the time your at school. We have been pretty safe at are school for lack of cameras and i think it should stay that way.

  27. I liked aaron S's comment about having cameras on the outside of the school, but not in classrooms. I feel like it would be a little odd if someone was too watch me every minute if the day at school.

  28. i disagree with Brendan L i think that as long as you are not doing anything wrong it should not be a problem that you are being watched. Also the cameras would not be that noticeable so i don't think that it would bother students very much, but it would keep us safer.

  29. I agree with jays2012 and ConnorSt. there is a point for having camera's inside and outside the school, but there is a point of the extent of use. You don't want to see yourself walking through the hallway every given moment through the day because that's just kind of creepy and takes safety to a new level that's not exactly necessary. Yet at the same time there is the issue of safety and that could help with situations like school shootings, but at the same time having camera's doesn't necessarily mean it's going to prevent anything from happening. Yes it raises the chance we can prevent dangers approaching the school but camera's can't see that far and by time someone notices it could be too late. What is the point of the camera's inside the school anyway? What safety is that going to protect us against? Even if someone comes in and shoots people or anything dangerous, it's a public open school, it's not like no one is going to notice and there are going to be tons of witnesses.

  30. I feel that it would be a very flagrant abuse of power if the school was to install security cameras in every location around the school, yet it would be effective in controlling the student body by fear. First, my arguement on why they would help. A friend of mine parked his vehicle in the main parking lot a while back, and it was keyed. He asked to see the security camera and by the time it had finished panning around, it had already missed the time of the crime, and the culprit got away. Now my arguement on it being bad is that controlling people through fear of being watched reminds me of a book I read last year called Little Brother. I would highly suggest reading it as a freshman. It is not right for a government, whether it is an adminitsration or a real one, to control the student, or civillians.
